Apple Watch Pro - Specs - Release Date - What to Expect
New extreme sports editions are coming to the Apple Watch this fall. The Quest Pro headset from Meta is nearing launch, and Apple debuts Lockdown Mode to combat targeted attacks on iPhones.
The Starters - Apple Watch Pro
Adding a higher-end Apple Watch to Apple's product portfolio follows a long history of the company expanding its product portfolio with pro models. Several MacBook Pro models are available on the market today, as well as iPad Pros, iPhone Pros, and AirPods Pros. Pro products, except for the headphones, differ in performance and price, plus Apple offers better screens.
Among the pro features of Apple's new, more expensive watch, which I detailed this morning, is its larger and more shatter-resistant display, enhanced hiking and swim tracking, and heftier and rugged case (probably titanium, since it's much more durable than steel).
Extreme sports enthusiasts and people who own high-end Garmin sports watches for intense workouts will benefit from that smartwatch. Those who simply want the most advanced Apple Watch will also find its bigger screen, larger battery, and metal design appealing.
That's similar to the pitch used to sell the iPhone 13 Pro over the iPhone 13. With the iPhone 13 Pro, along with the improved camera, the main differences are stainless steel bands instead of aluminum, longer battery life, and ProMotion.
I predict the company will go with the Apple Watch Pro name and marketing given that the rugged Apple Watch, codenamed N199 inside the company, will appeal to extreme sports enthusiasts and consumers who usually spring for Apple's pro devices. Apple has already emphasized the durability of the current watches, so it's clear that it believes it is a selling point.
Due to the transition to a new Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Edition may be discontinued. Apple has gradually shifted away from gold models and toward stainless steel and titanium versions after its first edition models were poorly received in the mid-2010s.
This is also an important time in the market for Apple's introduction of a new high-end Apple Watch. A Galaxy Watch Pro 5 will be released alongside a standard update next month, the only rival to the Apple Watch that I consider relevant.
A render of the upcoming pro Samsung Watch was published by Evan Blass, also known as @evleaks, this past week. A titanium case and a more rugged design are shown in the images, which suggest that the pro Samsung will appear more high-end. The price and battery size were also previously rumored to be higher.
I'm told Apple's watch will only be available with cellular service, in contrast to Blass's claim that the pro Samsung watch will likely be available in non-LTE and LTE configurations.
Similarly to Apple, Samsung will offer pro models with a larger screen. In comparison, a new regular Samsung watch will be capped out at 44mm, while a pro version will have a 45mm case. The Apple Watch Series 7 case size will be about 45mm, so Apple's pro watch could have a case size of 46mm or 47mm to accommodate the 7% larger screen.
So, it now appears that Apple and Samsung will be going toe-to-toe once again, this time around “pro” smartwatches.
For those not looking to pay the extra money for a pro Apple Watch that will likely be superseded just about 15 months from now, there will be two other Apple Watches also launching in the fall: a regular Apple Watch Series 8 and a new Apple Watch SE.
Besides an updated display at the 43mm and 45mm sizes of Series 7, the Series 8 will feature the performance-equivalent S8 chip, a body temperature sensor, and the new health feature Apple Watch Series 8. In addition to replacing the S5 chip in the current SE with the same S8 chip as the standard Series 8, the new SE will also indicate the end of the Apple Watch Series 3. The body temperature reader, however, is unlikely to be included.
It's likely that the new Apple Watch SE will replace the current model at its $279 price point, while the standard Series 8 will start at $399 in its smallest size and aluminum configuration to replace the Series
7. Can you tell me how much a new pro Apple Watch will cost? If we are going to figure out what to do, I think we should start with the current Apple Watch Edition. Today's Apple Watch Edition is an Apple Watch Series 7 that replaces aluminum or stainless steel with a titanium case. $849 is the starting price for the 45mm Edition.
The new high-end Apple Watch might start closer to $900 to $999, the starting price of an iPhone 13 Pro, considering it will have a slightly larger display, new sensors, and higher-quality materials. Just a couple months remain until Apple announces its plans.
The Bench - Apple Smart Watches
You will soon be able to lock down your iPhone with Apple. The new iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura operating systems weren't featured in all their glory when Apple announced them in June. It was announced this past week that Lockdown Mode would be available.
Messages, Safari and other web browsers, FaceTime and various other Apple apps and online services are disabled by the tool, which Apple says should only be enabled in the event of an "extreme" security need. In addition, when using a cable for features such as CarPlay, a passcode is required to enable those features, and the installation of new configuration profiles is restricted. What's the reason? An individual can be targeted in all of those places by a cyberattacker.
Government officials, journalists, activists, and activists have been attacked by state-sponsored attackers by using spyware. Those attacks can be countered by Lockdown Mode. iPhone maker Apple filed a lawsuit against NSO Group last year, which makes a product called Pegasus. NSO Group has pledged to donate millions to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Meta is close to launching its $1,000+ Quest Pro headset. Based on code strings discovered by developer Steve Moser and shared with me, Meta is nearing the unveiling of its first high-end mixed reality headset.eadset. This code confirms that the headset will be called the Meta Quest Pro, the same name as Apple's device scheduled for release next year. It is also evident from the code that Meta continues to work on eye-tracking functionality. Moreover, I have been told that the headset will cost well over $1,000 because it will be equipped with high-resolution virtual reality displays and advanced cameras.
The Scheduled Date - Apple Watch
Earnings for the third quarter of Apple's fiscal year are announced on July 28. A supply constraint could have hurt revenue by up to $8 billion, the company warned in April. The results will be revealed now. Chief ExecutiveLuca Maestri and Tim Cook typically give additional insight into the quarter and what to expect for the current quarter during the conference call. It's an interesting time around, with Apple's sales being affected by inflation, chip shortages, and manufacturing delays.
